ISEP joins European project for innovation in wastewater treatment

ISEP is part of the consortium for the European project “ReFitting the PLAN-DO toolbox for wider replication under the new EU wastewater directive”, coordinated by LNEC and funded by the European Union.

The School of Engineering of the Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP) is part of the consortium for the European project “ReFitting the PLAN-DO toolbox for wider replication under the new EU wastewater directive”, coordinated by the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) and funded by the European Union (Grant Agreement 101294788 — LIFE25-TAR-PT-LIFE ReFitting).

Starting on 1 June 2026 and running until 2029, the project aims to support the implementation of the new EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) through strategies, digital tools and treatment technologies for the control of nutrients, micropollutants and other emerging contaminants, antimicrobial resistance, water reuse and energy efficiency.

Monitoring the influent, effluent and sludge of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) will make it possible to characterise the performance, cost, risk and life cycle of the various options, supporting strategic planning and investment decisions.

In addition to ISEP, the consortium brings together the Municipal Water and Sanitation Services of Almada and the Catholic University of Portugal, combining expertise in sanitary engineering, technological innovation, environmental monitoring and public health.

LIFE ReFitting includes real-world demonstrations at the Valdeão WWTP in Almada.

The project will contribute to the European goals of zero pollution, safe water reuse and the promotion of more sustainable and resilient management of the urban water cycle.
